Cycle Route profile
The Tauern bike path is continuously and detailed signposted. The route leads through quiet and paved paths and country roads. Partly you will have to cycle on more travelled routes. A few short stages you have to manage on unpaved paths.
The quality of the trail can be described broadly as very good. An ascending slope is hardly present in this variant and therefore the cycling tour is also suitable for families with children.
The approximate difficulty level for this tour
Day 1: Individual Arrival at Krimml
Arrival to Salzburg – the culturally rich city of Mozart. Take enough time for a stroll through the old part of the city and visit the Mozart´s Birthplace.
Day 2: Tranfer by van to Krimml
At approx. 9 AM a van picks you up in your hotel in Salzburg for the transfer to Krimml. In Krimml you find the largest European waterfall. On a well-designed trail you can admire this natural spectacle. Your bikes will be available at the booked accommodation.
Day 3: Krimml – Mittersill (approx. 35 km)
You start your bike tour alongside the river Krimmler Ache. A breath-taking view over the mountain Großvenediger will attend you on your first cycling kilometers. Through the Obersulzbach-valley you reach your next overnight stop. In Mittersill you should schedule plenty of time for visiting the Nationalparkwelten with its attractions.
Day 4: Mittersill – Kaprun/Zell am See (approx. 30 km)
Your route runs through the High Tauern National Park and the Oberpinzgau. Snow covered mountains will constantly accompany you. Lush green meadows alternate with lovely small villages and offer fabulous scenery. In Kaprun you have the possibility to view the Alpine reservoirs.
Day 5: Rest day in Kaprun/Zell am See
Use the day for a refreshing bath in the lake Zeller See. The sporty bikers can make an extra tour or maybe you want to make an excursion to the Großglockner, Austria´s highest mountain. A shopping tour alongside the promenade make you forget the hardship of your daily working life.
Day 6: Kaprun/Zell am See – Maishofen (approx. 20 km)
You cycle along the Zeller See Lake on a beautiful cycle path directly along the lakeside. The typical Austrian village Maishofen with its castles will host you for the next two days. Enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding, partly snow-covered peaks.
Day 7: Rest day in Maishofen/active Recreation
You have the possibility for a short hike (approx. 1 hour) onto the Schwalbenwand (mountain face) to the Kammer-Eck mountain cabin where you can enjoy a hearty snack. Alternatively, you can cycle a tour through the town (approx. 15 km) where you can play a round of unique Maishofen bicycle golf.
Day 8: Maishofen – Lofer (approx. 35 km)
You cycle via “Maria Alm” with its famous pilgrimage church. Another highlight is Saalfelden, which is perfectly suited for lunch break. Further sights on your way to Lofer are the Seisenbergklamm and Lamprechtshöhle near Weißbach.
Day 9: Lofer – Salzburg (approx. 50 km)
Also today you cycle through the Saalach valley. Bad Reichenhall, in the “small German corner”, enchants you with Bavarian flair. After a short distance you have reached Salzburg, the city of Mozart. The cultural offer will embrace you. You should plan enough extra time for a walk through the city and a visit of Mozart´s birth house.
Day 10: Individual departure
Entire tour along the Tauern Cycle Path which is well-signposted throughout, from Salzburg however you follow the local cycle paths.
You cycle on quiet, asphalted or gravel cycle paths or rural roads, only in parts moderate traffic is unfortunately unavoidable. There are only very few ascents to tackle.
